Plastic Coated Wire Rope: Why Marine and Fishery Buyers Specify It

Bare wire rope is strong but unforgiving: it abrades, it corrodes at the surface, and it is rough on hands, hulls and fish. Plastic coated wire rope solves all three with a simple idea β a galvanized steel core for strength, a seamless polymer jacket for protection.
How It Is Built
We start with galvanized steel wire rope (so corrosion protection is doubled, not replaced), then extrude a uniform PVC or nylon coating over it. The result is specified by two diameters: the steel core and the finished outside diameter β e.g., a 4 mm core with a 6 mm finished OD.
Where It Wins
- Marine rails and lifelines β kind to hands, kind to gelcoat, shrugs off spray.
- Fishery longlines and trawl bridles β abrasion resistance where rope meets gear and seabed.
- Shade sails and outdoor structures β UV-stable colors that stay bright for years.
- Gym and playground equipment β safe touch, clean look, long life.
Colors and Options
Transparent (shows the galvanized core), black, blue, red, green, yellow and white are standard; custom colors run on volume orders. Nylon jackets offer higher abrasion resistance where PVC would scuff.
Specifying It Right
Always quote both diameters plus the core construction and coating material. And remember: the coating is armor, not structure β breaking load comes from the steel inside, so verify the core's grade and certificate as you would any wire rope.
